DO I HAVE TO BE A GRADUATE TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL CABIN CREW?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions.

Way back in the early 90s when I started my career, all you needed to have then was a school certificate. That is still the requirement in many advanced countries.

But in Nigeria, that changed with ADC and Bellview Airlines. These Airlines were the game changers..who made the minimum qualifications to be atleast a degree. Though we had Airlines who were more flexible about Educational qualifications, but, that gradually started changing too. I recall as far back as the mid 90s, in Okada Airlines, we had a master’s degree holder as a Flight attendant.

From 2006, more Airlines started raising their educational qualification bar. Today, most Airlines would require a degree as minimum qualifications. Some are even stricter and will not only require that you are a graduate, but in addition, a proof of NYSC certificate, indicating that you have completed your service year.

So you can see that gradually, the job chances for non graduates is reducing more than ever before. As we stand today except for very few Airlines i am aware of, for others, a degree is the standard requirements.

It is not totally impossible to get a job if you are not a graduate, but your chances are greatly limited. On a scale of 10-100percent. I would say a 20 percent chance.

Whilst, It is unfair to assume that educational qualification be used as an overall determinant of your abilities and capabilities, however we can not under play the role of education and how it can significantly improve and sharpen our critical, logical and reasoning skills.

My advise to you dear aspiring professional Crew, go to school and get a degree. It’s never too late. That will give you a competitive edge.
