Egypt Air has been fined USD140,000 by the US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) for violating a US trade embargo against Sudan, ch-aviation reports.
The BIS announced that EgyptAir had leased two B737-500s to Sudan Airways between 2010 and 2011 without having sought the required licenses.
The carrier must now pay the US Department of Commerce USD140,000 in four instalments by November of this year.
If the fines are not paid, the BIS may revoke EgyptAir’s export privaleges for a year.
A trade embargo was placed on Sudan in 1997 due to Khartoum’s alleged involvement in international terrorism.
