NSIB: Air Peace Pilots Showed Alcohol Indicators, Cabin Crew Positive for Cannabis in Runway Incident

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has released its preliminary report on the July 13 incident involving an Air Peace Boeing 737-524 aircraft at the Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo International Airport, Port Harcourt.

The investigation revealed that the aircraft, carrying 103 people from Lagos, landed long on Runway 21 after an unstabilised final approach, touching down more than 2,200 metres from the runway threshold before stopping in the clearway.

Although there were no injuries, the report pointed to poor decision-making by the flight crew, who failed to execute a go-around despite the unstable approach.

Toxicology tests on the pilots further raised concerns, showing indicators of alcohol consumption, while a cabin crew member tested positive for THC, the active ingredient in cannabis.

These findings according to NSIB spokeswoman, Mrs Bimbo Oladeji are being examined under human performance and safety management.

The NSIB has urged Air Peace to tighten crew resource management training and strengthen checks on crew fitness before dispatching flights.

It emphasized that the report remains preliminary, with a final document to be issued after further analysis.
