Passenger Killed at Airport When Falling Object Strikes Her Head

An Teng, a woman in her 60s, had just stepped off the plane at Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) for a vacation in Kunming, China, when an object from the airport’s ceiling fell and struck her with a fatal blow to the head. Maintenance workers were cleaning, when they dislodged some wire mesh that fell and hit her.

Teng was immediately taken to the hospital and put in intensive care. The cause of death is listed as a cerebral hemorrhage.

The airport had four workers stationed by Teng’s bed the entire time she was hospitalized, and covered all the medical costs, totaling about £30,000 ($44,600), according to the Mail.

Air travelers have seen their fair share of hospitals lately — earlier this month, a man had to be taken to the hospital after a bag fell from the overhead bin and  hit him on the head on a British Airways flight from London to Bangkok. The man had to stay overnight in the hospital for treatment.

KMG was recently in the news for a near security breach, when a man was stopped by authorities and suspended from flying after trying to smuggle a lighter through security by hiding it in his mouth . He refused to speak to workers lest he reveal the lighter, but when they asked him to take a sip of the water in his baggage, he removed the lighter and was taken into custody.
