A cavity search at a Sri Lankan airport netted four gold bars that a passenger was attempting to smuggle in his rectum.

When customs officials at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Sri Lanka noticed a 42-year-old passenger was “finding it difficult to walk,” they decided to investigate the situation a little more closely. What they found appears to defy both physical limitations and international law. Upon closer inspection, authorities say they discovered that the visibly uncomfortable flyer was hiding four 100 gram gold bars in his rectal cavity.

The BBC Reports that the alleged gold smuggler first drew the attention of customs officials shortly after arriving on a flight from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN). Sri Lankan government spokesperson Leslie Gamin told reporters that the unidentified suspect was “walking suspiciously.”

It seems that the reason for the man’s suspicious gait had everything to do with the nearly $14,000 worth of illicit gold he was hiding in his rectum. Officials say that the unidentified gold mule claimed to be the “Coordinating Secretary to the Ministry of Post, Postal Services and Muslim Religious Affairs.” Authorities were not able to confirm the suspect’s claim that he was a high-ranking Sri Lankan government official.

After being relieved of his heavy gold burden, the man was taken into custody pending charges. Gamin told the BBC that this latest bizarre incident is just one among more than 70 gold smuggling arrests made at CMB this year alone.
