A passenger took their emotional support turkey on a flight and no one can handle it

support-turkeyJust when you think you’ve seen it all…

Someone on Reddit shares a picture of an emotional support turkey and the world is a very confusing place again.

Reddit user biggestlittlepickle posted a picture of a traveller’s ‘support turkey’ getting settled in its seat before takeoff on Sunday with the explanation: ‘My neighbour is a flight attendant. He just posted this photo of someone’s ‘therapy pet,’ on his flight.’

The turkey does look a little surprised to find himself on the big bird in the sky. But, admittedly, not as surprised as the guy sitting behind it.

Obviously, Reddit didn’t believe a word of it. But, biggestlittlepickle was on hand to provide a little more info. The picture is from an internal US flight and it is not a joke.

In fact, his neighbour ‘also has photos of it being wheeled around in the terminal in a wheelchair. The turkey. In a wheelchair.’

Here is one:

turkey-wheelchairAn emotional support animal (ESA) is defined as ‘a companion animal which provides therapeutic benefit, such as alleviating or mitigating some symptoms of the disability, to an individual with a mental or psychiatric disability. Emotional support animals are typically dogs and cats, but may include other animals.’

So turkeys aren’t off the table. As it were.

Airlines in the US will allow passengers to travel with emotional support animals, and will honour anyone with the appropriate documentation ‘on a case by case basis’ in advance.

However, the rules are different in the UK. While British Airways allows passengers to travel with an assistance dog in the cabin with prior agreement, all other emotional support animals will need to travel in the hold.

You learn something new every day.

In the meantime, rumours the turkey had a one-way ticket home for Christmas with the family remain unfounded.
