Five killed in Florida plane crash on Christmas Eve

It is not yet known what caused the crash

The deaths of pilot and father John Shannon, his two daughters, son-in-law and a family friend are described as a “tragedy”

A family’s Christmas reunion has ended in tragedy after five of them were killed in a plane crash in Florida.

The group died when their light aircraft came down near Bartow Airbase runway, 50 miles from Orlando.

Pilot John Shannon, 70, his two adult daughters, son-in-law and a family friend died just after 7am on Christmas Eve.

Mr Shannon was a personal injury and death lawyer. His daughters were Southeastern University student Olivia Shannon, 24, and Baltimore teacher Victoria Shannon Worthington, 26.

Law student Peter Worthington Jr, 27, and Lakeland teacher Krista Clayton, 32 also perished in the crash.

The plane was on fire by the time emergency crews arrived

Their twin-engine Cessna 340 was heading into heavy fog when it took off for Key West, officials said.

Emergency services were scrambled but arrived to find the plan engulfed in flames.
