Everybody’s Dreams are made of Magic-African Aviation Revolution

“EVERYBODY’S dreams are made of magic. Come and fly with me and live your magical dream,” SAA pilot Fatima Jakoet says to young people considering careers in aviation. Jakoet is a senior pilot for the national carrier, holds an MBA and is doing a Harvard University leadership course.

In 2000 she joined the SAA cadet programme, which took place in SA and then in Australia. Her first stint as a pilot was at Airlink, and she joined SAA in 2005.

Jakoet made the leap of living her dream while working as a forensic scientist 16 years ago. While working on a drug bust at the airport she saw a plane and realised flying was her true calling.

“When I stood on the tarmac it was like the aeroplane was calling my name, saying ‘Fatima come fly me’.

“All my childhood dreams came flooding to me while standing in front of that aeroplane. It was a revelation of what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. What would it be like to be in control of this big heavy metal machine.”
