Airbaltic named world’s most punctual airline

Airbaltic is once again the most punctual airline in the world, according to OAG’s 2015 benchmark report.

The Latvian flag carrier led the rankings for a second year running with an average on time performance (OTP) rating of 94 per cent.

In second and third place were Panama’s Copa Airlines at 92 per cent and Brazil’s Azul at 91 per cent, making it the highest ranked low-cost carrier.

OAG compiles its annual report based on a database of over 50 million flight records, and incorporates data from its flightview flight status database.

Airports are categorised as small, medium or large and airlines as mainline or LCC and also by region (EMEA; China; Asia Pacific; The Americas).

Japan topped both the best small and large airport categories with Osaka Itami Airport (94 per cent) and Tokyo Haneda Airport (91 per cent) respectively. Brussells South Charleroi came in second in the small airport category and topped the EMEA category with an average OTP of just under 94 per cent.

UK airlines placed well in the EMEA category, with Monarch Airlines and Flybe ranking seventh and ninth respectively. Bristol is the only British airport to place in the EMEA top ten, placing sixth with an average OTP of 89 per cent.

John Grant, senior analyst for OAG said: “Runway capacity continues to be an issue for the UK. Heathrow and Gatwick’s OTP ratings are both down on last year, a real reflection of how far those airports are stretched for capacity.”
